I was skeptical when I first heard that Grand Rapids Art Museum (GRAM) was offering familiy-friendly art Saturdays.  For me, a former chemistry teacher, art museums conjure images of guards, large, quiet rooms, and walls upon walls of pictures that are hard to understand.

The Grand Rapids Art Museum has invested countless hours of thought and preparation to demolish that stodgy reputation.  In the last few months, GRAM staff have outfitted the lower level of the Art Museum with kid-friendly workstations.  Lest you think this is a glorified craft area, all family art activities offered by the GRAM are related to something on exhibit.  The idea is that you will start by spending some time in the gallery with your family experiencing art and then wind your way to the lower level where you and your family can create based on what you have seen and learned.  There is even a low table for those youngsters that do better creating without a chair!

Each month there is a new theme and the stations families participate in change to accommodate the theme.  This month, the activities focus on the work of Alexander Calder to go along with the display of his works that patrons enjoy.  This is a great way to help bring art to life and get kids (and their parents!) involved with art.

Here are some helpful hints to make the most of your visit:
  • Don't be afraid to ask questions or ask for ask for help.  People here are kind and are ready to enhance your experience.
  • Pre-print an activity guide or pick one up from the staff to help guide your trip.
  • Plan on spending about a half hour looking at art on exhibit.  Pick (5) pieces that will engage your kids and focus on those.
  • Plan on spending about an hour in the lower level interacting with the art .
  • Save money by parking in the Monroe Center Parking Ramp (entrance on Ionia Ave.). One hour of free parking is available daily before 6:00 pm.
  • Children 5 and under receive free admission; youth admission for visitors ages 6 - 17 is only $5!  Adults are $8.
  • As a family friendly facility, children of all ages are welcome! Elevators and ramps are easy for families with strollers and baby changing stations are available in many restrooms.
  • There is a cafe with a kids menu, as well as child-friendly seating options.

We would love to go and explore the art museum with our daughter. She has never been before! We love to create art at home. Rachel painted her first masterpiece for Father's Day when she was just 6 months old; she ate more paint than was on the paper! We love to paint and make collages. The new exhibits sound like so much fun!

I am the mother of 4 boys, and began framing their artwork a few years ago. They are so proud to see their art on the wall, framed like a fine painting. I also encourage their artistic work by having a box of scrap art supplies...beads, yarn, sequins, stickers, cut outs, etc. And I cut out old greeting cards and save them to make new "creations" down the road.

We would love to take our girls to the Art Museum. I am actually not a huge fan of going to Museums, but my husband loves them and it would be a great way for us to go as a family and share in a fun experience. We do many different types of art projects at home from painting to taking pictures (yes, they both have little cameras) on a daily basis. These family based art activities sound like a great way to spend a Saturday.

I have 3 daughters who love to draw and paint - we've never been to the art museum (having been under the same misconception about it being kid-friendly) but after reading this, I would love to take our family there! My girls have a blast drawing and coloring with everything from crayons to pencils and markers but I think their two favorite ways to color are on the computer and with sidewalk chalk on our driveway. :)

We are always making something out of things we find in nature, recycled materials, free stickers I receive in the mail, etc. They just love to create art with glue, paint, paper, markers, beads, beans, magazines, leaves, nuts, sticks or whatever we find around the house. We make dioramas, musical instruments, 3-D objects, painting and sometime just a mess!

We always enjoy bringing our girls to Festival of the Arts each year and included Art Prize last year. It gives them an opportunity to see how many different mediums to art there are. They have their own art room where they can let their imagination run wild. I would love for them to be able to create at the museum itself!

Being new to the Grand Rapids area we are enjoying our exploration of all the area offers! Our family's ages are wide ranged with those at home ranging from a college student to three elementary aged children whom I homeschool. What a wonderful opportunity to explore Grand Rapids Art Museum, observe art and then be creative ourselves! Sounds like an outing all our family members would enjoy :-)

We bring Art to Life with sidewalk chalk, crayons and encouraging drawing and coloring. We also read poetry aloud and instruct the children to draw what they picture in their minds. Lots of outdoor appreciation of God's great masterpieces and Meijer Garden visits.

Thank you so much for writing such a detailed description of the GRAM. I have had the wrong impression and am now looking forward to going. How fun! And your helpful hints are so appreciated. Thank you for your help in making memories for our family.

We bring art to life by allowing our children to have access to as much medium as possible whether it is paint, chalk, playdoh, or just plan old recyclable material and heavy on the imagination and let her rip. We end up with marvelous pieces of art they we keep or share or dismantle.

What a cool oportunity for my son to be exposed to different elements of art especially when art is becoming less of a norm in schools.

My daughter is the artist in our family. She is 4 and creating little masterpieces everyday. We have an art corner in our dining room area where she can use all kinds of mediums to create whatever she can imagine. She would absolutely love to spend a day at the art museum, I am sure it would inspire more creations at home!

My twins are three and a half and absolutely love making art whether it be with paint, beads, markers, stickers, homemade play doh or anything in between. The GRAM is one of the few museums/public attractions in GR that they have yet to explore. This would be a fantastic opportunity to introduce them to "real" art. We feel it's an important part of all cultures and learning about them.

We just moved to Michigan this summer and we are enjoying seeing how Grand Rapids embraces the arts. We have not yet been to the GRAM but loved ARTPRIZE and looking at art in local galleries. Two things we like to do when we visit art museums is bring along our sketch pads and colored pencils and try our hand at sketching works of art (mostly sculpture) or I will buy a few postcards of works of art at that museum and we will try to find the pieces in the galleries. Both my girls, 10 and 12, love arts and crafts as well. We would really enjoy the opportunity to see the GRAM and to see what works of art we could find and sketch there!

I've taught preschool for the past 3 years and am also the mother of a very creative 3-year-old. Art surrounds us everyday and I often bring my lesson plans home as a way for her to explore new mediums and materials. I let all of my children express their creativity whether it's inside constructing 3-dimensional art out of recycled materials or outside painting the snow with paint-filled spray bottles. I want my preschoolers and my daughter to recognize beauty in the world around them and look to the GRAM as a great place to appreciate the artists who came before them.

I never thought to take my toddler to the art museum. We regularly take him to the children's museum and at least once or twice a year to the meijer Gardens. He loves "Creating" whether with crayons or sculpting or gluing and building. I'll have to make plans to check out the GRAM this spring!

I have 4 boy and we all love art. My step mom was in last years' ART PRIZE competition. We do an art activity at least once a week an my oldest loves to work on his art in his spare time. Mostly drawing, but they all cheer when we get the paints out :) We have yet to go to the GRAM but plan on going after reading this!

We've been wanting to take the kids to the Art Museum ever since I hear that they were doing family style events. I try to help all my kids be "well rounded" so being able to expose them to a wide variety of activities is so much fun.
