How to enter:
Write a blog post with the answer to one of these questions:
(1) "What do you like best about the Public Museum?"
(2) If you've never been to the Public Museum, visit their website and write about "What interests you most?'

This contest is open until 9 am on Tuesday, June 9.  Winners will be posted on the Grand Rapids Kids website and in the weekly e-newsletter.  Good luck!  And look for more Great Give-Aways in June!

I loved Voight House (which is part of the Grand Rapids Public Museum) when I visited it around 8 years ago - it is exactly the way it was when it was built 100 years ago or so. It was interesting to see how people lived at that time. I've never been to the Grand Rapids Public Museum, but I think that would be more interesting and interactive for my children.

I love that they still have the old fashioned city street that they had in the old Public Museum. I loved to look at the old store fronts as a kid and still like to see them now.

My 7 year old son loves the fossil section at the Public Museum. He thinks it is so cool to see the imprint left in the rocks!

My favorite part that I remember growning up is the large bicycle. I made sure I got a picture of my kids on it last time we went. I also thought the printing press was really neat. The volunteer explained it all and printed bookmarks while we were there. Very cool to watch!

I like the Streets of Old Grand Rapids. Not being from GR originally, I like learning more about this city and learning its history. I haven't taken my kids to the museum yet, but hope to soon!

I still love the "old city streets" everyone has mentioned -- we used to call it "Gaslight Village" back in the day (late '60s/early '70s, when the museum was on Jefferson). Also, the dioramas bring back tons of childhood memories, along with the whale bones (which pretty much filled the ceiling of the building, and people used to throw pennies on from the second level). I could go on and on -- my mom must have taken us there a lot! What great memories.

We love the Public Museum!
We had our 8 year old's birthday party there this spring & all his friends loved the Dinosaur exhibit, planetarium show, dinner in the cafe, and carosel ride. I was surprised how many of these 2nd graders had never been to the museum before.
All my boys (ages 8, 4, and 2)love the 3rd floor animal & habitat exhibits. They also enjoy the Egyptian room and riding the antique bike & watching the player piano in the Streets of Grand Rapids. We also enjoy the room of jukeboxes - all manufactured in GR! The carousel is fun & so is the antique trolley.
We highly recommend the museum for all ages. If you have small kids, expect to do it at warp speed, so come back with just adults so you can linger & read all the exhibit displays.
The planetarium is very cool, but little kids get scared because it's so completely dark. For elementary school kids & up, I recommend the Night Skies show for learning how to recognize constellations. And for adults, check our the musical laser shows!

The old city streets exhibit stands out to me the most from my only visit to the museum many years ago. Now that I am married and have a young child, I am excited to make a family visit soon. My little guy would love the carousel!

The thing my kids always look forward to is the jukebox room. This most recent time we went, my 3 year-old started boogie-ing down and we were in stitches laughing. No inhibitions.

We recently took our kids (7.5 & 2.5) to the dinosaur exhibit and the LOVED it! It was especially neat because my son just went to the "Creation Conference" last winter where Jared learned all about how dinosaurs were NOT millions of years old ... so he was debating the signs by the fossils with my hubby. I even learned things that I didn't know before! =)

My daughter loved the carousel (of course) as well as the bumpy old streets of GR. I, too, grew up going to the GR Museum and "Gaslight Village." We really need to go back again without my 2.5 year old so we can "read" more signs and explain things to my son (Mallory was getting VERY bored and restless).

The John Ball Zoo is ALWAYS a hot spot (literally some days) to bring the kids during the summer (at least 3-4 times)!

I agree with the parents who say you'll breeze through when you have a little one along. It's just a way of life when you're with a 2 year-old.

My son loves the animal exhibits, trying to find the deer and other animals hiding in the woods.

And here's a disclaimer...comments made by people on this blog are their own personal opinions and are not necessarily endorsed by Grand Rapids Kids.

My husband and I met online and he is from Europe. The first time he came to GR to visit me, we went to the museum. I had never been and I loved walking through the "city streets" to see the history of GR. Now, 9 years later, my 4 year-old loves walking those same streets. Recently he was very interested in the pharmacist who talked to him in "old Grand Rapids."

I went there for the first time with one of my sons. We spent the majority of the time in the dinosaur exhibit. He absolutely loved it and wants to go back!

My 4 year old loved the dinosaurs and animal exhibit. I thought the carousel was wonderful (although my son would not get on it.)

I have to agree with Tamrah -- I also love the back streets too.

My husband & I have enjoyed the furniture exhibits. The furniture manufacturing history of this area was very interesting. We moved to Michigan from the east coast several years back and only thought of Michigan as “Motown, Cornflakes and Cars.” We also enjoyed the carousel and look forward to sharing it and the entire museum with our grandchildren this summer.

I haven't been to the museum in a while and visiting its website made me want to go again with the kids. The collections A-Z exhibit looks really interesting. I'm going to pencil this in for a future rainy Saturday.

My kids love the dinosaur exhibit and we really enjoy the planetarium. The Christmas-time Santa-around-the-world was also a hit for my scavenger-hunting kids.

I want to learn about the city that I have been living in for the past 7 years. I think the museum can do that for me. There is so much out there. I want to be able to answer questions that my children might have about Grand Rapids. I just learned that GR was known for furniture.

I've been to the GR museum thrice now with my family, and I must say it has attractions for all age groups. GR Historical exhibits for elders, planetarium for the tweens, carousel rides for preschoolers, and while I stood staring at the mesmerizing massive whale skeleton, I thought "How did they get all this into one museum!"
What really takes the cake is the Habitat's exhibit with stuffed wild animals and birds in super realistic settings. Some of them even look ready to pounce! Not seen the GRPM yet? Go today!

gr museum hmm i remember my 7th grade feild trip there it would be nice to visit there again i loved the space exzibit they hade for a while (pardon me spelling)

I like that they have different exhibits; but my kids always like the old standbys better. For my daughter, it's the bubbles and for my son it's that spinning disk that you try and spin other circles on it - I have NO IDEA what it's called but any mom of a 5-8 year old boy who has been there knows what I'm talking about :)

Like many of the others who have already wrote, I loved going to the museum and visiting the old city streets. I was so glad that when they built a new museum this exhibit was still there.

My 2 kids (ages 5 1/2 & 3) just went to the GR Public Museum for the Dinosaur exhibit. They absolutely loved the hands on things the museum had to offer. My 3 yr old was a bit afraid of the planetarium show (even my 5 1/2 yr old said he was a bit frightened). They also love the carousel rides. I enjoyed looking at the hat exhibit. Fun night had by all!

Without a doubt our family runs to the carousel! My kids would ride it 100 times if they could. Not only is it a beautiful carousel it has one of the best views of our wonderful city and river. The next favorite is the mock Grand Rapids city scene. My kids are fascinated with the stores and the things in them. The Planetarium although a little extra to see is worth the visit and the kids are in awe. We are lucky to have such a great museam with so much offer!

We absolutley love the "old time" streets. We pretend that it is the "olden days" of Grand Rapids and pretend that we are spending a day in town. We also love the Carousel, of Course! My 6 year old son is STILL talking about the "Who Done It?" type exhibit with the crime scene and clues.

Sun, 31 May 2009 17:28:01

I love the whale skeleton hanging from the ceiling! I grew up on Chicago Museums and have never seen anything like it until I moved to GR. Thanks for the contest.

I love the big bike they have and I even had my dad (64 y.o.) take a picture on it! :-) I also love riding the carrousel (sp?) because it keeps me young!

Visiting the museum on a yearly basis has been a "big outing" for my daughter and I since we moved to Grand Rapids seven years ago! We added a new little brother for my daughter, and she will be elated to show him all the fun "hands on" (cars, the old town, etc) displays, and especially the carousel-enjoyed by the whole family! Time well spent..a day in a museum!

I love the museum because it helps me and lets me tell my son how much we have evolved into technology, animals, innovations, business, e.t.c. I really love to go back and see how my great grandparents grew up and the things that I think are so amazing to see. I really love how they keep the childrens interests at heart as well.

It's been a couple of years since we visited the GR Museum, but the old GR streets are probably my favorite. My kids love the carousel--and the "gross things" exhibit that was there a couple of years ago!!

I have not been to the museum but the laser light looks cool and there are several things that I think my kids would really like.

The Grand Rapids Public Museum has something for everyone.I love the view of the Grand (you're practically on top of it) and the "furniture city" exhibits. My children were awed by the whale skeleton, dazzled by the carousel rides, and fascinated by the huge clock and doll exhibits. As they have aged, the planetarium, the Egyptian room(the mummy still freaks the nine year old out, though)and special shows seem to peak their interest now.

Typically, the kids love the carousel, but truthfully, I love the hours of enjoyment we can have without tears, arguing or TV. There really is something to interest everyone. We are looking forward to checking out the laser shows this year and plan on spending some family time at both museums.

the grand rapids public museum was very interesting. From the start my daughters 5 and 3 both enjoyed the classic carousel. After that we did the scavenger hunt and we liked seeing all of the classic dolls, rocks, glass, and then jumping on the good ole train. Then came gas light village where it was open to show all the vintage shops and how they were ran back in the day. It was a joyous time and we look forward to attending again in the near future. We also liked the dinosaur exhibit.

There is so much to love about the GR Public Museum. The history is so rich (Gaslight village has always been my favorite since I was a kid!) to the planetarium and the new carousel!! Awesome!

I hadn't been to the public museum in years until just a couple months ago for the dinosaur exhibit. My 2-year-old loved it! I'm excited to go back to get a better look at the rest of the exhibits and history in that building. My husband is returning next week from a year-long deployment to Iraq and I am thinking a trip to the museum will be a perfect family outing!

My sister just visited the museum and her kids absolutely loved it. We have never been and can't wait to check it out this summer!

It has been so long since we have been to the museum. My children and I talk about the planitarium, the dinorsaurs and my personal favorite the olden day town. I never get tired of seeing anything at the museums but like most people we hav not been able to afford to go in the last couple of years. Hopefully soon we can save enough money so that we can enjoy it once again.
